Photograph of body prints with water on calligraphy practice scroll before it evaporates
The dancer becomes my brush with a mind of her own. I am removed from the directness of making marks unique to my body and movement and I observe and guide the evolution of the work with placements of ink, paint, and objects, as well as the challenge of natural elements as Kanami Kusajima moves and explores different mediums and supports. Following an investigation of Eastern calligraphy where one clears the mind and allows for the hand to lead and move with brush and ink across the page, I’m interested in how these two ways of mark making coincide.
